Far East Organization has made real estate history by clinching its fourth FIABCI Prix d’Excellence – the only developer in the world to do so. This year, the trophy is awarded to The Fullerton Square Project at the 54th FIABCI World Congress 2003. This prestigious international award recognises real estate developments that exhibit excellence in all stages of their creation. It underscores Singapore’s achievements in its pursuit of world class real estate development excellence.

The S$400 million Fullerton Square development involves the successful restoration and adaptive re-use of the Fullerton Building, a historical civic institution, to a grand world-class heritage hotel, The Fullerton Singapore. It also includes the construction, with its technological and logistical feats, of a modern, trendy al fresco dining and entertainment complex on the waterfront called One Fullerton; as well as an underground link way connecting the two developments.

Commissioned in 1919 as part of Singapore’s centennial celebrations and completed in 1928, the Fullerton Building is a bulwark that had played a part in some of the most momentous events in the modern history of Singapore. It was the centre for trade and commerce during the colonial era. After independence, Singapore’s economic success was charted from here. The Fullerton Building was also a social epicentre – people flocked to this very central site throughout our nation’s growing years, to do business, to socialise.

Far East Organization and its Hong Kong-based sister company Sino Land Company Ltd responded to the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA)’s inspired vision for the Fullerton Building, which was to “create the grandeur of the Ritz, the opulence of the Peninsular and the majesty of the Waldorf Astoria”. Every city in the world has several grand hotels. Singapore then had only the Raffles. The developers recognised that there was room for another grand hotel in Singapore and that the Fullerton Building was eminently suited to become a great hotel with its rich heritage, majestic architecture and ideal location.

The vision was that The Fullerton would continue its role as the bustling centre of Singapore’s commercial, social and official life, redefined for 21st century living in a global community.

Employing a design approach that entailed the creation of an internal courtyard with a clear glass ceiling bringing a sense of light and space into the hotel atrium and lobby, Far East Organization was able to create inward looking rooms. These rooms enjoy pleasant views of the courtyard with lots of natural light flowing through the windows. This innovative design breakthrough allowed for the accommodation of 400 rooms within the Fullerton Building, making a significant contribution to the commercial viability of the hotel.

Today, The Fullerton Singapore is a successful hotel that blends warm Asian hospitality with the trappings of modern technology, an icon of New Asia Singapore. It has won a succession of national and international awards for all aspects of its development and business operations.

Far East Organization also recognised the potential of developing a landmark commercial building cum car park at the site across the road from the Fullerton Building. With its strategic location overlooking the Marina Bay with the Central Business District as a backdrop and panoramic views of the waterfront, the site is ideally suited for an alfresco dining and entertainment hub that will enhance the offering of The Fullerton hotel. The ultra modern architecture of One Fullerton is designed to provide a sharp contrast to its historic neighbour, emphasising the uniqueness of the Fullerton Building’s Edwardian Baroque architecture. The modernity of One Fullerton provides an interesting foil to the city’s skyline in the background. Together, these key components of the Fullerton Square development have become important Singapore landmarks of the new Millennium.

Other Far East Organization projects that have earned the Prix d’Excellence are: Gardenville (Residential Category 2002), Far East Square (Specialised Category 2001) and The Bayshore (Residential Category 1999). The diversity of the awards affirm Far East Organization’s expertise in all areas of real estate, as well as its vision and leadership in realising quality well rounded developments that provide an excellent environment to live, work and play.
