Launched on 28 June 2006, the GEN-Y programme aims to nurture and stretch the capabilities of our Assistant Managers and to shape these young leaders’ sense of identity, key values and team spirit. The programme seeks to operationalise these values into specific, observable and measurable behaviours by involving participants in specific projects that translate the Organization’s goals into work tasks.

GEN-Y participants presented the findings and recommendations of their projects to the Organization in a Special Extended Effective Action Meeting (EAM) on 21 November 2006.

The presentations were evaluated on a set of criteria:

  • Knowledge of the business and key players
  • Data analysis
  • Options evaluation and recommendation
  • Implementation planning
  • Presentation delivery

The panel of judges comprised four Top Executives:

  • Mr Owen Ow, Executive Director
  • Mr George Khoo, Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Retail Business Group
  • Mr Wee Kheng Jin, Director, Corporate Resource
  • Mr Chew Boon Yeow, Director, Purchasing & Contracts

The winning submission entitled, “Hospitality Portfolio: Riding the Waves of Opportunities”, clinched the top prize of $5,000 cash.

Each of the other four participating teams won a merit prize of $1,000 cash.

The Young Executives Learning Lab (YELL) aims to provide a learning and networking platform for our budding executives to gain insights and lessons in business leadership from the experiences and journeys of young business leaders and operators from various fields. Speakers and resource persons will be drawn from both in-house and other leading enterprises to provide a rich and diverse spectrum of real-life business case studies.

Three YELL workshops were organised during the year:

  • “Remodeling of Far East Organization’s Hotel Operations” (1 April 2006 & 20 May 2006)
  • “Sharing of Far East Organization’s retail vision with Orchard Central as platform”  (22 August 2006)

The team studied Far East Organization's hospitality portfolio (consisting of five Far East Hotels and nine residences with services in Singapore) concentrating on our developments in the central area. It proposed ways in which we could ride on the growth of opportunities generated by MICE, the two integrated resorts and the rejuvenation of Orchard Road to become one of the world's greatest shopping streets.

More business and leisure travellers would be visiting Singapore. Their stay would be longer than the current three days. There would be a new breed of travellers - the Generation X travellers, who are not brand loyal and like to stay at a place that has style. They are entrepreneurial and less formal. In addition, there is also a worldwide growth of sophisticated travellers who are willing to search for stylish accommodation and look for that unexpected unique experience.

Going forward, Singapore is fast becoming a vibrant global city. It targets to attract 17 million visitors by the year 2015. With more hotels and serviced apartments coming into the market, it is essential that we distinguish ourselves from competition, and capture mind and market share as soon as possible. We need to provide facilities and services that cater to the needs of our target customer groups. We also need to build a recognisable brand now to promote our developments locally and globally.

Some of the ideas suggested by the team include upgrading our properties to improve visual appearance and provide facilities to meet new demand, enhancing service levels, acquiring new sites or converting existing buildings for hospitality use, carving out smaller units to increase the number of guest rooms or apartments and provide a diversity of products to cater to different customer groups, and improving marketing reach to create international awareness for our brand.
